Apple’s iPhones are already known for their video capabilities, and their cameras continue to evolve as the company stays ahead of its competition. With the iPhone 14 lineup, Apple has also introduced Action Mode – a pioneering camera feature that takes Apple’s video recording to new heights.
An iPhone 14 and 14 Pro camera feature is an Action mode, which is somewhat self-explanatory. This feature allows you to enhance stabilization in video mode, for example when you chase your kid around a playground or run behind them and record their workout. It’s easy to use, but there are a couple of things to know to get the most out of it.
What is Action mode on iPhone 14?
Which iPhone supports Action mode?
Currently, Apple reports that the Action mode will be available only on the iPhone 14 lineup. And besides, there’s no word on whether they’ll bring Action Mode to other iPhones.
How to turn on Action mode on iPhone 14
Action mode is like any other mode in the iPhone 14 camera app. You can swipe through the modes on the slider, select the Action mode, and shoot really professional action videos.
- Open the Camera app.
- Switch to video mode.
- Select the Action mode toggle.
Action Mode
You are now in Action mode and… ready to take action! The camera uses the ultra-wide lens by default—you’ll see the 0.5x icon at the bottom of the screen—but you can tap the other options to change the lens. You can also toggle between HD 1080p and 2.8K resolution options (set to HD by default) by tapping the icon in the top right of the screen.
Optimize Action mode for indoors
When you’re indoors, you’ll probably see a warning saying “more light required.” Action mode works best outdoors in ample light, but you can still use it indoors. While the low light warning appears, you can still use Action mode, though your footage will look grainy. But there’s a way to optimize Action mode for use in less than stellar lighting conditions.
- Go to Settings and tap Camera > Record Video.
- Scroll down and toggle Action Mode Lower Light on.
This will reduce the stabilization effect a bit but will improve video quality in those dim indoor lighting conditions. It helps, but it doesn’t work miracles. If this setting is turned off, you won’t receive any low-light warnings if the room is well-lit, but if there is very little light, you will still be prompted to find more light. The standard video mode and stabilization are good enough in those conditions, so you’re better off using them.
But for capturing extreme movements – especially outdoors – you have another tool at your disposal with Action mode.
