What is Dynamic Island on iPhone 14 Pro, and how to use it?

Techviwer September 22, 2022

An official unveiling of Apple’s iPhone 14 lineup took place at Apple’s Far Out event on 7th September 2022. It has been confirmed that Apple will redesign its notorious iPhone notch for iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max, one of the most rumored changes.

Apple calls the new tablet design Dynamic Island. So what is a redesign? Is this just a hardware repositioning or can we expect more? Here’s everything you need to know.

A new iconic front design: Dynamic Island

Apple has finally answered the contempt of many Apple users for the notch on the iPhone. While the company didn’t actually extract it, Apple redesigned the notch as a pill-shaped notch it likes to call the Dynamic Island.

As the name suggests, Dynamic Island is an island on top of the device. The front-facing True Depth camera and Face ID sensors are redesigned and 31 percent smaller to fit into the smaller tablet notch. The proximity sensor has also been re-engineered to detect light from behind the display.

Apple calls it “the biggest change ever to the iPhone display.” However, don’t expect the entire iPhone 14 series to feature a new front design. Dynamic Island is limited to iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max only.

Dynamic Island is just one of several new iPhone features that Apple announced at its Far Out event. Other features include accident detection on iPhone 14 and Apple Watch 8 and Emergency SOS via satellite.

What the Dynamic Island can do?

In Dynamic Island, you will be able to interact with your iPhone with much greater intuitiveness and seamlessness. By merging software and hardware, it transforms your dead black space into an active area for notifications and background activities.

Using transitions and carefully crafted animations, it creates the illusion that the pill-shaped cutout fluidly morphs and transforms into different shapes in response to an alert.

There can be up to two background activities displayed in separate bubbles.

Shows alerts and notifications

Dynamic Island will show you relevant alerts and notifications. For example, it lets you stay up-to-date on Lyfts you’ve booked. It also allows you to perform various actions by providing relevant controls that work throughout the system.

What’s commendable is that it all works without interrupting anything you’re doing in the app. Additionally, each alert has a unique personality, making it easy to differentiate one alert from another.

Examples of notifications and alerts that it displays include:

  • Incoming and current calls
  • Sound alert status
  • Charge status
  • Accessory connection
  • Face ID identification
  • Contactless transactions

Displays background activity

However, Dynamic Island does not only support alerts and notifications. Additionally, it displays the song you’re currently playing on Apple Music, as well as current background activity on your iPhone. App background activity is displayed whenever you swipe from an app to go to the home screen and exit the app.

Gives access to controls

This feature also gives you easy access to the control directly, allowing you to perform related actions without leaving the application you are using. For example, when you’re on a call, it lets you adjust the volume, turn on the speakerphone, end the call, and more.

All you have to do is tap and hold Dynamic Island to open and display more options or tap it to return to the app.

Keeps you updated in real-time

The dynamic island adapts in real-time, updating you with crucial information such as the next directions in Maps and remaining time in Timer. What’s even more astounding is how it works seamlessly with Live Activities, a new iOS 16 Lock screen feature.

With Live Activities, you can keep track of things happening in real-time, such as the food delivery that’s arriving in a few minutes, a ride booked with a friend, or the score of the basketball game you’re watching.

But this feature isn’t limited to built-in Apple apps. All notifications and alerts, regardless of which app they come from, are uniform and consistent thanks to Apple’s robust design system.
